He lights up my universe

I grew up learning new and extraordinary things about space, about the ever so large universe that wraps around us. Though there’s one part of the universe that I couldn’t live without. That thing, well, person, being my grandfather. His name is Delevan Du-Bois, but I just call him Abba.

As a young man he lost one of his kidneys in 1968 due to health complications and has gone years on one efficient kidney. Well, you can only oil a car so many times before the rust takes over and the engine fails. And that’s exactly what has happened to his one kidney, the engine is failing. He needs a new one desperately.

My Abba has not only enriched and enlightened my and my sister’s lives, but many others as well in the scientific community and beyond. He will never be afraid to put a smile on a stranger’s face, or offer help to those in need. And it would be too much of a loss to lose this amazing soul. As his granddaughter, I can’t continue to watch such a star struggle to shine. He lights up my universe.

Del now has End Stage Kidney Disease and desperately needs a life-saving donor kidney, blood type O. You can make a difference. Please help spread the word to your family members, friends, co-workers, or any groups you are affiliated with. The more people we reach the greater the probability we can find a suitable kidney match for Del.

He is working with Renewal, a remarkable non-profit organization.

To learn how you can save a life or for more information about kidney donation, please call 718 431-9831 EXT. 209 or email R9196@renewal.org. Renewal’s website is www.life-renewal.org.

So please, help him, and help our family get the word out to replace his kidney.

Thank you. 🙂

Having Del Du-Bois in Our Lives

Everybody should be so lucky as to have a Del Du-Bois in their life.

Not only is Del a loving, supportive husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, he’s also a guy who can fix ANYTHING!  He’s a problem solver – a master of the elegant solution.  He’s a scientist who really does know (or can figure out) how things work. He’s the guy you should always want on your team.  Quietly, unpretentiously lending his skills to his family, friends, congregation and community, Del is incredibly generous with his time.  To me and my husband, who have been friends with Del and Bobi for two decades now, Del is the guy who figured out what was really wrong with our wheelchair, how to get the lift on our van to raise a 400-lb power chair with a person in it (which it wasn’t supposed to do), the right way to change a whole-house water filter and how to avoid heel spurs.  And those are just the solutions I can remember.

You would think he’d be exhausted from taking himself to and from dialysis three days a week in the early morning, but he delivers Bobi to her committee meetings in the evenings with a smile and never lets on what a toll his dialysis is costing him.  He’s devoted to Bobi and to helping her serve the causes that are important to her.  It’s lovely to watch them.  They are a couple totally in sync with each other.Because her own physical condition is fragile, Bobi in particular needs Del to stay strong and vital. If you’re at all able, please help Del break free from the dialysis life, receive a new kidney and get back to the business of living life with the energy he deserves. I would do it myself if I could.

And make sure to meet this fellow, Del Du-Bois.  You’ll be glad you did.
